In response to: Peace the Old Fashioned Way?

Michael C., Georgia, USA [Visitor]
This "Peace...The Old Fashioned Way" logo outlines a B-52 Stratofortress, one-third of this nation's DEFENSIVE "triad" used during the Cold War, and one-half of Strategic Air Command's role in that triad. (The other half being strategic nuclear inter-continental ballistic missles, AKA ICBM's.) If you learn the history of SAC, you'll find that none of those manned B-52's were really expected to return if they ever launched. But it is only BECAUSE those B-52's, ICBM's, and SLBM's (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missles) stood poised, ready to strike at a moment's notice (the ICBM's themselves were nicknamed "Minutemen") that we are free of communist tyranny today. Oppression? Domination? No, my friend. Readiness. Unblinking, unwavering, determined readiness. God bless the men and women of this country's armed forces, active and veteran, living or fallen, who put their country and their fellow countrymen's lives ahead of their own to go in harm's way to defend, not only our freedom, but that of all who would remain so!

i was a fan of B-52s.but not anymore.I agree with the post above of Michael that "Peace can only be the product of voluntary human interaction." I think for developing their economical co-operative social relationships the product speaks clearly.

"Peace can only be the product of voluntary human interaction." I understand and appreciate your concept of peace, and the desire behind it, but the ONLY thing "voluntary human interaction" has ever or will ever bring about is WAR. Let's face it: Everyone born into this world is rotten to the core and selfish, and we all (including you, my naive friend) want our own way. (You want proof? Go to any daycare facility and watch. No one has to teach those little darlings to want-and-take rather, they need to be taught to share.) Eventually someone has the economic/political/military power and resources to try and take what they want on a national scale, and those from whom they would take fight back. That's war. But sometimes just the threat that someone would fight back is enough to make the would-be aggressor pause and ask, "Do I really want to take the risk?" That's called "deterence." It's like a big, mean dog that keeps most would-be burglars out of your yard. Most of us who advocate "Peace, the Old-Fashioned Way" do not believe in what you call "domination" but we're not so foolish as to believe that "Peace can only be the product of voluntary human interaction."

easy there Kwark :)

I'm not exactly a pro-gun type. Neal made the point better than I did. I just made the point that one *law-abiding* armed citizen on each aircraft could have prevented the entire thing. But of course that was not possible, as we all have lost our rights in that venue. Why be surprised when free speech follows? See ya in the Gulag, comrade! :)

spud, I think the 2nd admendment protects our rights to bear arms against our own government, which integrated over the entire population probably causes more harm than the occasional terrorist attack.

kwark, criminals, by definition, break the law.

I'm taking a chance in speaking for Spud (he'll certainly chime in, I hope), but I think the point Idaho is making is akin to the notion that, in a post 9/11 world, terrorists could never hijack a plane with knives without facing a rebellion by the passengers of the plane. It is the the threat of force that acts as a deterrent. It's similar also to nuclear proliferation: remember the movie, War Games? Nobody wins.

Another aspect of such an argument is that laws that prevent weaponry (in general) will be followed by peaceful citizens but disregarded completely by violent-loving folk. So what good do they do?

Not really hoping to start a debate. Arguments about guns, though interesting and important discussions to have, are for another post, at another time.

Right, because YOU probably would've already been shot by some drunken businessman pissed over his failure to be upgraded to first class. More guns will solve everything.

You already have to give up your 2nd amendment rights when you fly. Why not the rest of them as well? It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: If the second amendment rights weren't suspended for law-abiding citizens in-flight, the terrorist attacks of 9-11-01 never could have taken place.
