Kerry's Botched Attempt at Humor
By now, you've probably seen the headlines suggesting that Sen. John Kerry thinks U.S. troops are dummies and that you better stay in school unless you want to end up in Iraq. Here's what Kerry said:
He said: "You know, education -- if you make the most of it, you study hard and you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Purportedly, the comment was supposed to be a joke aimed at the Bush administration but Kerry botched the execution by leaving out the word "us", as in "you get [us] stuck in Iraq". In full, Kerry was supposed to say:
"I can't overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq."
Like fatasses at the Golden Corral, the Republicans are all over this with an ad asking Kerry to apologize - per the GOP, the "soldiers are waiting". Even some Dems are asking for an apology.
I'd say Kerry's intended joke is really a critique on politicians as it took more than just Bush to get us in Iraq in the first place. Perhaps its as Hillary says, it takes a village: in the case of Washingon D.C., it's a village full of idiots.
Here's a listing of events surrounding Kerry's botched joke.
