Man the Creator
I have come to understand the essential characteristic of man to be that of a creator: human beings create value.
The farmer creates food; the manufacturer creates product; and the professional creates information. In step with that which we create, we are filled with purpose. The value I create as an analyst is transformed into wages that are transformed into food, entertainment and investments. Creating value is creating life. And through the division of labor, I trade my productive creation for the creations of others.
For such a simple concept, I have only begun to see its wide applicability. Indeed, the creation of value is what drives the world forward.
Great men are those who have created greatly. I recently spent some time in an art museum dedicated to Georgia O'Keefe. Artistic works have a long-lasting value. Furthermore, their value can be quickly ascertained and enjoyed. Surrounded by a lifetime of her creations was overwhelming.
Comparatively, my own creations as an analyst are ephemeral: the information I produce is consumed to make a decision and then it is forgotten. Further compare this creation to what I write for this blog: my creation here could be useful for ages. However, it is not yet widely enjoyed. Either I have not imparted it with enough value or many have yet to find the value I have already created.
Comprehending man as the creator is necessary to understand how human interaction works: humans create value and then trade such value with others. When the value I create is worth more to someone else and they have something I value more than they do, human interaction is likely to result.
Understanding value creation also clarifies the inherent flaws of fiat currency. Fiat currency is not the result of value creating behavior; rather, it is the result of a coercive force mandating value to a piece of paper. Though there is some small value to the paper, such value only exists so long as others are willing to trade for it.
Compare fiat currency to the gold. Mining gold is a creative behavior: mining creates value. Gold is a luxury item that is a scarce resource. Gold has value because the world demands it for products. Furthermore, it has value even when not used as currency. Comparatively, fiat currency is only valuable as currency. When that value is lost, people will burn it for fuel. The government cannot create value out of thin air.
Understanding the importance of value creation can help clarify your life. For me, understanding my desire to create lasting, tangible works highlights the inherent flaws of my current job. Though I enjoy problem-solving, figuring out solutions to other's problems only to be disconnected from fixing those problems results in a disconnect in my life. I have traded away the value I create for higher wages and a cushy job.
The solution to my predicament is obvious. It's a solution I've recognized before. I must become an entrepreneur. Only as an entrepreneur can I particpate fully in the creation of value.
It is this full-ness of participation that will fulfill me, as a man, a creator.
